The Vietnamese community in New Zealand now boasts over 15,000 members, who have made significant contributions to the development of the country. During major festivals, especially the Lunar New Year (Tết), the Vietnamese community organizes a variety of cultural activities that strengthen national unity and connect people to their roots, often through traditional folk games.

On January 18th, the Vietnamese community in New Zealand celebrated the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake (Ất Tỵ) in a grand event in Wellington, under the theme “Vui Tết – Connecting Communities.” The event, jointly organized by VietCom, the oldest Vietnamese association in New Zealand, and the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand, attracted a large number of Vietnamese residents from Wellington and surrounding areas, as well as local families and friends.

The event was not only a festive gathering to welcome the new year but also an important occasion for the community to reflect on cultural values and pass on traditional customs to younger generations. Mr. Nguyễn Văn Thái, President of the Vietnamese Association, shared that despite challenges and external influences, the Vietnamese community in New Zealand continuously strives to organize cultural activities to preserve and honor their cultural heritage, promote patriotism, and foster mutual support within the community while staying connected to their homeland.

Tet celebrations in Wellington were not just a traditional New Year party but also featured lively cultural performances. Students, youth, and members of the Vietnamese Women’s Association in Wellington presented dynamic songs and dances, bringing the spirit of Spring to life. The emotional songs about the homeland touched many people, immersing them in the festive atmosphere of the approaching Lunar New Year.

In January, VietHub also organized the “Tết Market Festival 2025” in Wellington, aiming to introduce and promote the rich cultural traditions of the Vietnamese people to international friends. This event was part of the community’s celebration of the Lunar New Year and a significant cultural occasion.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese associations in other cities like Auckland, Christchurch, and Palmerston North, along with Buddhist organizations, also organized various lively activities to welcome the new year, bringing festive joy to Vietnamese people across New Zealand.

2025 also marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and New Zealand and the 5th anniversary of their Strategic Partnership. The two countries have achieved many important milestones in cooperation, laying a solid foundation for further enhancing bilateral relations.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese Ambassador expressed sincere gratitude to the Vietnamese community in New Zealand for their valuable contributions to strengthening the friendship between the two nations. Their meaningful activities not only keep the connection to the homeland alive but also serve as an important bridge for further developing the relationship between the people of Vietnam and New Zealand.

With around 15,000 members, the Vietnamese community in New Zealand has increasingly played a vital role in contributing to the country’s social life. Through various associations in major cities, they continue to make important contributions to the country’s cultural and social fabric.
