The Waitangi Treaty and Waitangi Day

Waitangi Day, held annually on February 6, is a significant day in the history of New Zealand. It marks the signing of the Waitangi Treaty in 1840 between representatives of the British Crown and over 40 Rangatira (Maori chiefs). The flagpole at the Treaty Grounds marks this historic location where the discussions and signing took place, symbolizing the event that established the relationship between the Maori people and the British.

On February 5, 1840, a marquee was set up in front of James Busby’s house, where Maori leaders and British representatives debated the Treaty. After intense discussions, on February 6, over 40 Rangatira signed the Treaty, Te Tiriti o Waitangi. By September of that year, more than 500 leaders from across New Zealand had signed the document.

Waitangi Day is not only a celebration of the Treaty but also New Zealand’s national day, reflecting the formation and development of the nation.
