If you’re preparing to set foot in New Zealand for the very first time, one of the most important steps in your journey is completing the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD). This is a mandatory procedure that allows border authorities to collect essential passenger information, safeguard national security, and help control diseases and food safety.
For those who have never travelled internationally before, the process may seem overwhelming, especially when it comes to customs paperwork. Below is a comprehensive guide from Koroo designed specifically to assist first-time international travellers in filling out the NZTD.
Documents Required When Entering New Zealand
Before starting your NZTD declaration, make sure you have the following documents ready:
- A valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining)
- New Zealand visa (if applicable)
- Traveller Declaration (NZTD)
- A return flight ticket or a ticket to your next destination
- Proof of financial support (in certain cases)
- Accommodation information for your stay in New Zealand
- Vaccination certificate (if required by health regulations)
How to Fill Out the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD)
Currently, travellers can complete the NZTD online via the official website of the New Zealand government. Follow these detailed steps:
Step 1: Access the NZTD Declaration Website
Go to travellerdeclaration.govt.nz. The website interface is in English, so it’s best to have all required information ready for a smooth process.
- Click “Start your declaration”
- Select “New Declaration” if this is your first time entering New Zealand
Step 2: Enter Personal Information
Fill in the following details:
- Full name, date of birth, gender
- Passport number and nationality
- Flight number and date of arrival
- Address where you’ll be staying in New Zealand
📌 Note: All information must be entered in English and must exactly match the details on your passport. Mismatched data may result in your declaration being rejected or you being required to resubmit it.

Step 3: Declare Goods and Food Items
You’ll be asked whether you are carrying:
- Food, plants, or animal products
- Sports equipment or footwear used outdoors
- Cash over NZD 10,000
- Other restricted or prohibited items
New Zealand enforces very strict biosecurity laws. Be honest and thorough in your declarations to avoid fines or penalties.
Step 4: Submit Your Declaration and Receive a Reference Number
After completing the declaration, you will receive an email with a reference number. This number allows you to track, revise, or complete your declaration, and it may be required during immigration procedures.
Important Notes for Filling Out the NZTD
- Each traveller, including children, must submit a separate declaration.
- Ensure no sections are left blank to avoid rejection.
- If any detail changes, you must resubmit the entire declaration.
- Complete the declaration before boarding your flight to save time upon arrival.
Completing the New Zealand Traveller Declaration accurately and thoroughly is the first step toward a smooth and legal journey. With this detailed guide from Koroo, we hope you’ll feel confident navigating the process — even if it’s your first time visiting the Land of the Long White Cloud.
